If you live in Wyoming and are unable to work due to a serious medical condition, you may qualify for Social Security Disability Insurance (SSDI) benefits. However, the Social Security Administration (SSA) has strict eligibility rules. Understanding these requirements can help you prepare a strong application and avoid unnecessary denials.
Find out if you qualify for SSDI benefits. Pre-qualify in 60 seconds for up to $4,018 per month and 12 months back pay.
Please answer a few questions to help us determine your eligibility.
Basic SSDI Eligibility Requirements
To qualify for SSDI in Wyoming, you must meet both work requirements and medical requirements.
1. Work Requirements
Because SSDI is an insurance program funded through payroll taxes, you must have worked long enough and recently enough to qualify. This involves earning work credits:
- You earn up to 4 work credits per year based on your income.
- In 2025, you earn 1 credit for every $1,730 earned.
- Most people need 40 work credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years before becoming disabled.
- Younger workers may qualify with fewer credits, depending on their age when they became disabled.
2. Medical Requirements
You must prove that you have a severe medical condition that:
- Prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA) – in 2025, this means earning more than $1,550 per month ($2,590 if blind).
- Has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
- Significantly limits your ability to perform basic work-related tasks.
SSA’s Listing of Impairments (Blue Book)
The SSA maintains a Listing of Impairments, also known as the Blue Book, which includes medical conditions that may automatically qualify if specific criteria are met. Examples include:
- Musculoskeletal disorders: Severe back problems, joint dysfunction, fractures
- Neurological disorders: Epilepsy, multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s disease
- Cardiovascular conditions: Heart failure, coronary artery disease
- Respiratory conditions: COPD, chronic asthma
- Mental disorders: Depression, anxiety disorders, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia
- Cancer: Depending on type, stage, and treatment requirements
- Immune system disorders: Lupus, rheumatoid arthritis, HIV/AIDS
What If Your Condition Isn’t Listed?
Even if your condition is not listed in the Blue Book, you can still qualify if you can prove that:
- Your condition is medically equivalent in severity to a listed condition.
- It prevents you from performing any of your past work.
- It prevents you from performing any other work based on your age, education, and skills.
Required Medical Evidence
To qualify for SSDI, you need strong medical evidence, such as:
- Detailed treatment records from doctors, specialists, and hospitals
- Lab tests, imaging studies, and diagnostic results
- Statements from your treating physicians explaining your symptoms and how they limit your daily activities and work abilities
Residency and Citizenship Requirements
To receive SSDI:

- You must be a U.S. citizen or a qualifying legal resident.
- You must reside within the United States or its territories.
