SSDI Eligibility Rules in Wyoming

Meet the SSA's Definition of Disability

The SSA uses a strict definition of disability. To qualify for SSDI, you must show that:

• You have a severe physical or mental impairment that has lasted or is expected to last at least 12 months or result in death.
• Your condition prevents you from engaging in substantial gainful activity (SGA)—meaning you cannot earn above a certain monthly income.
• You cannot perform your past work or adjust to other types of work.

Work Credits Requirement

To qualify for SSDI, you must have earned enough work credits by working and paying Social Security taxes. In Wyoming, this is no different than in other states.

• You can earn up to 4 credits per year.
• Generally, you need 40 credits, with 20 earned in the last 10 years before your disability began.
• Younger individuals may qualify with fewer credits, depending on their age when they became disabled.

Be Under Full Retirement Age

SSDI is only available to individuals who have not yet reached full retirement age. Once you reach that age, your SSDI benefits will automatically convert to retirement benefits.

Meet Medical Listing or Functional Criteria

Your condition may automatically qualify if it meets or equals an SSA Listing of Impairments. If it does not, the SSA will assess your Residual Functional Capacity (RFC) to determine how your condition limits your ability to work.
